Chapter 5
Verse 1
I) Be ye therefore followers of God.
A) Therefore- because of what has just been stated.
B) Followers of God- walking in the same paths.
II) As dear children. This is how we are to follow.
A) Dear in the sense of being loved dearly- Ones so loved.
B) Dear in the sense of obedient, loving children. As opposed to the rebellious
child who does not consider their parents hurt or dignity.
Verse 2
I) And walk in love- walk referring to a well-trodden path. One well worn by
continual use. 1 John 1: 7-11; 3: 13-18; 4: 7-12
II) As Christ also hath loved us. How has Christ loved us?
A) By giving himself for us.
1) As an offering- A gift worthy to express the worthiness of the one worshipped.
Malachi 1: 8
2) As a sacrifice- One acceptable, of value enough to repay the offended party.
a) The holiness of a perfect God being offended, a perfect substitute to stand in place of the guilty must be found.
Hebrews 9: 22-24
3) For a sweet smelling savour.
a) Exodus 30: 1-10- The example of the incense. All in the Tabernacle tent would smell of the incense offered.
b) Genesis 27: 27- The example of Jacob in Esau’s clothing.
c) Matthew 26: 6-13- The example of the woman and box of ointment. The smell as on her hands and his head would be the same.
4) When we approach God in the name of Jesus, God smells his SON!
